It’s a no-brainer that summer is the biggest season for movies. I can honestly say that I myself spend so much money on movie tickets from May through August, but unfortunately I can’t see them all! There are some movies that scream “YES, THIS IS GOING TO BE A MEGA BLOCKBUSTER!”, while others are possible contenders to be surprise hits. Then, there are those that have the premise to look amazing, but wind up flat-lining, not to mention there are those films where its obvious that it needs to be stayed away from straight out the gate.
While flipping through Entertainment Weekly’s Summer Movie Preview (aka one of my favorite issues of the year!), I decided to write about some of the movies that are coming out this summer. Some are movies that I’m really looking forward to, while others are movies I maybe even never heard of. Then, at the end of August, I’ll do a recap to see if my predictions were right on track, or if I was way out in left field.

MAY
Snatched (May 12)
Don’t hate me for my confession here, but I’m not a fan of Amy Schumer. Something about her… I don’t know, she’s just not funny. Goldie Hawn, however… I absolutely f#cking love her! Overboard & First Wives Club are some of my favorite movies that she starred in! So, to see that Hawn chose Snatched as her first movie in 15 years to come back to the limelight with… it got me curious about this movie. I might wind up waiting for it to go to a discounted theater to see it, or go before noon when its incredibly cheap. But who knows, maybe Snatched might be better than I initially thought it would be upon first seeing the trailer.
Paint It Black (May 19)
To be honest, when I first saw the poster for this, I disregarded it & didn’t look back. But after seeing that Amber Tamblyn directed it, I was immediately drawn to it. I’m a huge fan of Tamblyn’s (she even liked one of my Instagram pictures on my personal page once!), so of course I’m in support of this. Alfred Molina, along with Tamblyn, are the biggest names attached to this film. So thanks to a lot of actors who aren’t exactly household names, it allows Paint It Black to have the potential to be one of 2017’s underdog champion films.
Based on the trailer, not much information is given to what the plot is about. What is known, though, is that a woman named Josie (Alia Shawkat) gets a phone call that her boyfriend has passed away. Josie then begins to get close to her deceased boyfriend’s pianist mother (Janet McTeer). Despite not knowing much about McTeer’s role in the film, she portrayed a frightening character in the trailer — even going as far as giving me Mommie Dearest vibes. I can’t wait to see how Paint It Black turns out!
Baywatch (May 25)
Biceps… girls in bikinis… the beach… what else could you want in a summer movie?! Oh, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson & Zac Efron looking like amazing eye candy! Not to mention Alexandra Daddario looking stunning as always!
When I first heard that there was going to be a movie-reboot of the television series that I grew up with, it made me think that Hollywood truly had run out of ideas. Dwayne Johnson as the iconic Mitch Buchannon? Although I love just about any film Johnson stars in, I didn’t think he could fill the shoes that David Hasselhoff once filled. After seeing the trailer, I realized that the film would be taking a comedic route rather than the more serious-natured tone than the TV series had.
Despite Hasselhoff not portraying his famous role of Mitch Buchannon, I was happy to hear that he would still be appearing in the film in a different role. Pamela Anderson will be appearing in the film, too… but in a different take of her famous C.J. Parker role. Instead of donning the famous red bathing suit, Anderson will be portraying Casey Jean Parker, the mother of C.J. Parker (Kelly Rohrbach).
I already have my tickets purchased to see this Memorial Day weekend, so let’s see how it does!
JUNE
Wonder Woman (June 2)
Alright, so we all know that DC films don’t exactly have the best track record… at least in recent years. Yes, Zack Snyder is one of the producers (cue ‘thumbs down’ emoji), but that doesn’t mean I’m giving up on Wonder Woman; it would be like judging a book by its cover. I’m a huge fan of Gal Gadot, and I like the idea that in Wonder Woman, we go 100 years into the past, where she’s more naive, and much different to the Diana Prince/Wonder Woman we all saw in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It’s not exactly an origin-story, so to speak, which I’m totally okay with. Not to mention, Patty Jenkins is directing. In the past, Jenkins directed Monster, so I’m excited to see what she will pull off with Wonder Woman.
47 Meters Down (June 16)
Mandy Moore. ‘Nuff said.
No but really, 47 Meters Down is another one of those movies where they’re a guppy in a sea of major summer blockbuster sharks (no pun intended). Based on the trailer alone, this film reminds me a lot of The Shallows. Take a girl (in this case, two), throw her into a scary/life-threatening situation in the middle of the ocean, and watch everything play out.
Originally, it was set to be a straight-to-DVD movie back in 2016, but thanks to Entertainment Studios (who bought the rights to the film from Dimension Films), they cancelled the straight-to-DVD idea, and decided to re-work it as a theater-released film. I’m so glad they took this route, because I’m a sucker for shark films (even crazy/absurd ones like the Sharknado franchise!). I have my predictions as to who will live and who will die in the movie, but I’ll reveal in my recap blog post in August if my predictions were correct.
The House (June 30)
As much as I want to have faith in The House, I’m iffy on how it’ll turn out. I absolutely love Amy Poehler, she’s one of my favorite comedians. But Will Ferrell… lately his films have been ‘eh’ with me — case in point, Daddy’s Home & Get Hard.
The plot of the movie surrounds around Scott (Ferrell) and Kate (Poehler), who team up with their neighbors to start an illegal casino in their basement to earn money for their daughter’s college fund that they destroyed a while back. I hate to sound negative, but I think that The House is a movie that I’ll be waiting for Redbox to check out.
JULY
Spider-Man: Homecoming (July 7)
Spider-Pig, Spider-Pig, does whatever a Spider-Pig does. Oh wait, wrong movie. My bad!
I absolutely cannot WAIT For Spider-Man: Homecoming!!! It’s my most-anticipated movie of this summer. After seeing the list of possible contenders of who almost portrayed Peter Parker, there’s no denying that Tom Holland was the perfect choice for the role. His cameo in Captain America: Civil War was spot on, playing a rambling teenager with… well, you know who Peter Parker is, no need to continue that sentence. But despite having such little screen-time in Captain America: Civil War, it was a perfect amount as a back-door spin-off for Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Add Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Marisa Tomei, and Michael Keaton into the mix… and you have a perfect movie.
Atomic Blonde (July 28)
Action and/or horror movies that are female-lead are my cup of tea. I know I referenced this before with 47 Meters Down, but take The Shallows for example. Blake Lively kiiiiiilled it, being able to hold her own (literally by herself) for 99% of the movie. Atomic Blonde obviously doesn’t take place in the middle of the ocean, but you kind of get where I’m going with this.
Atomic Blonde stars Charlize Theron as a spy who finds a list of double-agents who are being smuggled into the West. Based on the trailer alone, the action sequences are awesome, and the bits of jokes are sprinkled in perfectly, not pushing it into the comedy genre, keeping it strictly in the action/thriller genres.
This comes out the weekend of my birthday, so its safe to say how I’m ringing in the final year of my 20’s :p
AUGUST
The Hitman’s Bodyguard (August 18)
I’ll be honest, I’ve never even heard of this movie. I saw it featured in the summer preview issue of Entertainment Weekly, so I literally just watched the trailer on YouTube before I wrote this. The entire trailer was filled with car chases, explosions, dumb stunts that are ‘supposed’ to be funny, and Samuel L. Jackson yelling out “Mother f#cker” in his typical form almost any chance he got. Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” was the song chosen for the trailer, and the whole premise just didn’t make sense.
I’m gonna take a stab and say its worth waiting for Redbox to check this movie out instead of wasting $10-15 at the theater.
RECAP
Unfortunately August doesn’t have a lot of films being released, but I had to include at least one film to round out the summer preview, considering August is still technically in the summertime.
